Design for a bilingual exhibition catalogue, Victor Kastelic: Cloudburst, accompanying the exhibition with the same title (Galerija Veronika), which took place in conjunction with the international exhibition of contemporary art Expect the Unexpected (ETU 22) (5 locations, Kamnik, Slovenia • 24 Sep–2 Nov 2022).
The book required a minimalist yet dynamic approach to the design to represent a showcase of a small yet pivotal selection of drawings, which would be attractive to a general Slovene audience both stylistically and thematically.
Works of art by Victor Kastelic (1964), a well-established American-Italian artist, are being exhibited in Slovenia for the first time. As part of the international exhibition Expect the Unexpected (24 Sep – 2 Nov 2022) in Kamnik, and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the completion of the Cloudburst project (2000–2002), Victor presents 20 from a total of more than 500 drawings from the series. The drawings are in mixed media, mainly in a combination of pencil, pastel, and turpentine oil on paper, and are all 40 x 60 cm in size. Around 200 of the drawings were initially published in the catalogue Cloudburst (June 2004). The current selection, shown at Galerija Veronika in Kamnik, was made particularly for a Slovene audience.… The Cloudburst project has already been shown in three countries that are interwoven in Victor’s ancestral and cultural roots. It was presented in the USA (2002, Salt Lake Art Centre, Utah), in Italy (2004, Palazzo Bricherasio, Turin) and in Great Britain (2005, The Talbot Rice Museum, Edinburgh), with each exhibiting more than 300 drawings. That is why the exhibition in Kamnik will be an emotionally charged event for Victor: as a member of an American family with Slovenian roots, he will now be building bridges with Slovenia through art. As said in both Slovene and English proverbs, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
